Driving and parking in London – What You Need to Know
Whether you’re already city-savvy or a first-time driver in the Big Smoke, here’s the low-down on what to expect while you’re navigating the streets of the capital. Driving in London can be frenetic, frustrating, and overwhelming, but if you start off prepared when you get behind the wheel the experience will be stress-free.
Prepare to go slow
Ensure you give yourself plenty of time to get to your destination and remember you are unlikely to go anywhere fast through London. Buses, traffic lights, and the sheer volume of traffic means that anything above a total standstill is good progress.
Gen up on the congestion charge
Between 07:00 – 18:00 on weekdays you’ll have to pay a congestion charge if you’re driving through central London. You can pay online, at Transport for London and make sure you do pay, or you’ll get slapped with a £130 fine. The charge doesn’t apply at weekends and there are exemptions but it’s best to do your research first.

Stay out of the bus lane
There are bus lanes everywhere in the capital because there are plenty of buses too. Although it can be tempting to slip into that nice, wide, empty lane, don’t unless it’s outside of the times it says on the sign! It can be easy to accidentally find yourself turning into one, so make sure you come out as soon as you can or you’ll get some angry looks from those who can use them – like cab drivers, and motorcyclists.
Use SatNav
If ever there’s a good time to use the SatNav, it’s when you’re trying to navigate the streets of London. Put the audio on so you can hear well in advance when you need to turn off and take some of the pressure off. No one expects you to have the street knowledge of a black cab driver, so let the tech help you out. That said, it’s never a bad idea to keep a map close to hand as well.
Drive during quieter times
Yes, it’s London, so it’s always busy, however, you can help yourself a little by trying to avoid driving through the morning rush usually from 07:00- 09:00. Again, try to avoid the mad post-work rush from 16:30 – 19:00 as well.
Figure out parking in advance
It’s all very well reaching your city-centre destination, but will you be able to park once you've arrived? Before you leave home make sure you know that there’s parking nearby, and it’s wise to try and find out how much it will cost so you don’t have any surprises when you arrive.
On-street parking is notoriously hard to come by and is often by permit only
Plenty of car parks now offer a pay-by-app service, you can use your mobile phone to pay and like with Saba you can make life easy and book online.
